Wissenswertes über das Mindesthaltbarkeitsdatum (MHD) unserer Produkte

Useful information about the best before date (BBD) of our products

The best-before date (BBD) is a key labeling element on packaged food products that tells consumers until what point the product will retain its optimal properties—such as taste, smell, consistency, and nutritional value—when properly stored. This is not a strict safety limit, but rather a quality indicator.

Function and significance of the MHD

Manufacturers determine the best-before date based on extensive shelf-life tests that take into account factors such as composition, packaging, and storage conditions. If a food product exceeds its best-before date, this does not usually mean it is automatically harmful to health. Rather, its sensory quality (e.g., taste or texture) can change over time. Especially for products such as canned goods, dry foods, or preserved products, the best-before date serves as a guideline for the best quality.

Difference to the use-by date

It's important to note the difference between the best-before date and the use-by date, which is primarily used for perishable foods such as fresh meat, fish, or dairy products. While the best-before date primarily represents a quality indicator, the use-by date marks the point in time after which a product should no longer be consumed for health reasons.

Legal basis in Austria and the EU

In Austria, European regulations apply, in particular EU Regulation No. 1169/2011, which regulates food labeling. These regulations require manufacturers to provide, among other information, a best-before date, if appropriate for the product in question. National institutions, such as the Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety (AGES) and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Regions and Tourism, monitor compliance with these regulations and provide information on the proper storage and use of food.

Consumer information and practical tips

For consumers: While the printed best-before date should be used as a guide, it is no substitute for common sense. Many foods can still be eaten after the best-before date has expired, provided they do not exhibit any abnormalities such as an unpleasant odor, changed color, or changed consistency. However, if there is obvious doubt, the product should no longer be consumed.
